Bellon : Location and Direction
Location
Situation
Bellon is a little hamlet 1.5kms off the N24 close to Josselin an historic town beside the Nantes Brest canal in the heart of Brittany.
Josselin is a beautiful medieval town set on the banks of the Oust river. It is an amazingly well preserved town with an excellent yet typical rural Saturday market. The town has a medieval castle, doll museum, many restaurants, bars and creperies. Motorboat and canoe hire is also available in the summer months by the castle on the canal.
You can take a lovely walk along the tow path.
It is just 6kms from Ploermel which was founded in the 6th Century and was the home of the Dukes of Brittany. Ploermel takes its name from Armel, a 6thCentury English monk.
Le Lac au Duc at Ploermel is a place for watersports and sailing, being the largest natural lake in Brittany, and with its safe sandy beach you can swim or relax in the Breton sunshine.
You can kayak, windsurf, sail and windsurf and there is also a waterslide and splash pool for kids, free tennis courts and a 9 hole golf course on the shores of the lake. Cycling and walking trails surround the lake and also lead you to the Nantes/Brest canal.
Around the lake is a 7.6km walk edged by thousands of hydrangeas (Hortensias)
In Ploermel there is an astronomical clock which is classed as a national monument. It was built in the 19th C and has 10 panels depicting the solar system.
While Ploermel enjoys a close association with the characters from the King Arthur legends with the nearby forest and lake being called an enchanted meeting point of myth and reality, the town itself will impress you as more modern rather than romantically mediaeval.
Directions
From the main ferry ports of Caen or Cherbourg head towards Rennes.
From either direction on N24 (Rennes or Lorient) take the D129 La Croix Hellean.
From the Lorient direction, leave the slip road and turn right, then first right back over the motorway on to the D129.
From Rennes direction, leave the slip road and it takes you straight on to the D129.
The D129 takes you away from the motorway, follow this road through Brambuan for approximately 2 KM. At the fork in the road, take the right hand road towards La Croix Hellean. Follow the road into La Croix Hellean, past the big white B&B on your right. At the end of the road, turn right. After a dip in the road, approx. 1KM, the house is on the left hand side just after a little crossroads. It stands alone with steps up to the front garden and a large monkey puzzle tree in the garden.
